Maestro Yiannis Hadjiloizou was named President & Artistic Director of the Cyprus Academy of Music (Established 1956) in 1999, by the Academy’s founder Madam Despo Hadjiloizou-Frangakou (synonymy).
Following his return to Cyprus in 2006 after a ten year stay in the United States of America, Yiannis housed CAM it the 1901 Mansion at 18 Xanthis Xenierou Street in the Old Town of Nicosia in 2008. The Academy’s “Music & Wine” seminar proved to attract the interest of various culture enthusiasts. On December 3, 2018 Yiannis invited some family and friends to celebrate his birthday at the Mansion. The word spread quickly, and more than 150 uninvited guests rushed to experience the Maestro Residence.
On the menu for the night was Live Music by the housekeeper, Shawn Clarke – then Chef at Aperitivo Jet Set Lounge, and Maestro’s close friend and student, Harrys Tsiartas, Local Wine, and Artwork by internationally renowned Cypriot artist Nitsa Hadjigeorgiou, Yiannis’ high school teacher. All guests were thrilled with the Maestro’s hospitality and personality, his Piano playing, as well as with the overall experience at his Mansion. The Old Town was quite underdeveloped at the time, and Yiannis himself attracted a fine following into the area. This gave birth to the idea of opening his Residence and home of the Cyprus Academy of Music to the general public. Having a glass of red in his office with his Harrys and Shawn, he informed them of the idea. The Concept was already alive: Music. Wine. Art. A Maestro Concept.
Minding the neighbours, the Gate at Xanthis Xenierou remained the entrance only to the Cyprus Academy of Music and his Residence. A second Gate at Constantinou Paleologou 32 at Constanza Bastion of the Venetian Walls of Nicosia now became famous as the doorstep of Academy32, a legendary landmark for the Capital City of Cyprus.
Following a 9 month training period, the new venue opened its Gate on June 4, 2010. Since then, we have listed the finest local wines as well as cheese and charcuterie, exhibited the work of dozens of Artists from Cyprus and beyond, and staged Live Classical, Jazz, and World Music hosting innumerous Musicians from over 50 countries and 5 continents.
Our original logo was designed by Yiannis himself and developed by Ad & the City. In 2013 Maestro designed a second subsidiary logo, developed by his friend and Illustrator at “In Toto” Simone Philippou.
The Academy has maintained an expert Wine List of the Finest Local Vines and Producers, as well as a Special Treasury of Boutique Etiquettes from Greece, and Rare Luxurious Singles and Blends from around the World, all served in grape varietal specific stemware. A special bond has been developed between Maestro and the ‘Anama Concept.
Academy 32 has been hailed by the Frugal Traveller of the New York Times as “Chic But Affordable”, while TimeOut gives it “a scent of another era”.
In January 2016 Academy32 moved temporarily into the Nicosia Galleria (Stoa).
In Fall 2017 a new location will be announced.
